I've been watching the Katrina coverage on CNN and on Fox, so that hopefully I can get a genuinely balanced view of what's going on down there. The nadir of the day for CNN was when this Miles O'Brien character was interviewing the mayor of Ocean View, I believe, and got all confrontational with him, asking loaded questions like "don't you think it's taking entirely too long for FEMA to do anything down here?" "Do you think the government and FEMA are not taking this crisis seriously?" and more of the same ilk.

Happily, the mayor jumped down Miles-baby's throat, and said "I'm not going to argue with you about whether or not FEMA and the gov't have responded -- it's obvious they are doing the best they can, the problem is that the normal routes of aid delivery are under water here." Shut that boy up good, which of course the Commie News Network can't have, so they cut him off. Left-wing idiots.

Fox News did balance out the reporting, though...it was equally stupid with concentrating on all the dead bodies floating around, left on the sides of roads and interstates, and generally not being fussed over and buried. One jerk stood about 10 ft upwind of a dead guy on I-10 and indignantly blathered about the dead being "ignored" by the "authorities", who apparently are going past the ex-people and selfishly trying to respond to the needs of the ones still alive. Evil, evil authorities!

And let's just set aside that all these "authorities" have uniformly responded that their #1 priority is the LIVING. Besides, what will you do with all the floaters and other sundry dead folks? Bury 'em? Where? Who's going to do it? Store 'em? Where? Jesus H. K. Rockefeller Christ, they're DEAD. They don't count right now... it's just MEAT that's going to go really bad really fast in the hot, humid climate of NOLA.

(Just an aside: I imagine the 'gators and snapping turtles are going to be REALLY fat here right soon! Good eating, those reptiles.)

Which does raise the question: Given all that water, why aren't any of these folks dropping a line and catching fish? Can't the water be filtered and boiled? I haven't heard of a single Cajun whining on TV -- I imagine they're enjoying fish, gator, turtle, and mudbugs like they always have.

And now to the chimps loose in NOLA, running around stealing STUPID shit like 60 pairs of Skechers or tons of gold chains. Or raping anything they can catch, even 9 yr old little girls. Or shooting each other over stupid shit. Or taking potshots at rescue personnel. IMHFO, those asswipes should be shot. Neatly, cleanly, and immediately. At this point, looting food/water/dry goods isn't a crime. Looting stuff you're only wanting to sell should be a capital offense, punishable by immediate execution. Working violence of any sort on a fellow refugee should be a capital offense, punishable by being torn limb-from-limb by other refugees.

Goddammit. New Orleans was our Queen City, a beautiful and shining lady. If you've ever been, you're a citizen for life. If you haven't been, I pity you. I hope and pray she will one day regain her old world, slightly tawdry, lively health.

Bonne chance, ma chere.
