I know better than to blithely announce that I'm going, because there would be the whole "It's too expensive" argument, which basically is true -- we're living on my SSD, rent from Patrick, and rent on the house in Tallapoosa along with what's left from my SSD back pay.

So I thought about it, wondering if there was anything I could sell. Not to make $600, which will cover my flight, hotel, and eats. Hmmmm.

Then I remembered -- THE CENSUS!!! They're hiring part time people to be census takers and to work in the office! And if you work in the field you work in your community. Walk around, knock on doors, and fill out forms? Using a computer for the most part? I can do that!

So this morning I called Social Security first to make sure that wouldn't fuck up my bennies -- the word is I can work any 9 months in a 5 year period making any amount of money, and it won't count against me. It's called a Trial Work Period, to see if I can work. After those 9 months are up, I have 36 months where I can't make more than $1000 a month, after which they deduct $1 from my benefits for every $2 I earn. Medicare isn't affected.

That was great news, because I only plan to work as long as necessary to save up the required cash! That's another thing -- I can quit whenever, no inquiries from SSD as to why. I just have to let them know when I start working, and let them know when I quit.

So I called up the Census Bureau, got scheduled for the skills exam (tomorrow at 11, at the library that's a mile away from me), downloaded the application and the I-99 form, and I'm all ready to embark on this.

Oh yeah, if you're hired, you get paid for training, which is 4 days, plus you get paid for your commute time to and from the training location!

If anyone is looking for a part-time job (altho you can work up to 40 hours), go to 2010 Census Jobs and check it out.

I figure at $11 an hour, I'll have to work about 60 hours, or 3 weeks. I can do that for The Cause.
