... but this occurred to me as I was musing on the possibility of the cut and cap plan failing as abjectly as everything else has.
What if all the oil companies got together in their secret Fortress of Greed one weekend, musing on the question of what to do in order to guarantee that drilling could continue in the Gulf, shallow, mid and deep drilling? How to circumvent the tree-hugging, whale-humping, dolphin-fucking environmentalists...
"Hey!" says the BP rep. "What about this! We go ahead and drill down on the Deepwater Horizon, then instead of capping it off, we fuck up the blow-out preventer so it fails? We can stage an explosion or something to make it look like an accident.
"Then we spend months doing this and that, looking like we're trying to stop it, but really letting it blow millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf."
The Chevron and Aramco reps look confused. "What the hell good would that do?" gripes Shell. "It would just give those bleeding heart assholes something else to whine about."
BP leans eagerly over the fine burl walnut desk (hand rubbed with silver dust to bring out the grain). "Yeah, but this is the beautiful part:
we take so damn long to plug it that the whole Gulf dies. No more fish, no more shrimp, no more whales, no more seafood or tourist industry to complain and bitch about their livelihoods or their pretty white sand. Think about it! A big dead body of water, where the only thing you
can do is...."
They all look at each other and begin to grin as the simple elegance of the plan dawns on them.
"DRILL BABY DRILL!!!"
So am I just a raving paranoiac or do you think this could have happened? It just seems BP is being almost comically ineffective....
ETA: in light of
cheerful bit of news, seems my fevered imaginings might not be so imaginary after all...
