Ever since my last reflux/aspiration adventure the other day, I've been extremely gurgly and GERDy. I sit here and my stomach is roiling and gurgling, and I'm eating antacids like they're candy. I can't even drink my pink lemonade Kool-Aid, it's too acidic. So I'm having to drink straight water, which I hate. I've never liked straight water -- my water must always have a flavor of some sort.

I've been eating bland, boring food, but if I let my stomach (pouch, really) stay empty too long, here comes my old friends Acid Burps and Gurgly Tum. So then I go eat some rye bread or Cheerios (the only things that quiet this shit down) and I'm okay for an hour or so.

When I go to bed I have to take about 4 slices of rye bread with me in hopes of keeping the reflux at bay. I've had to do this since just a few months after my RnY. That and Cheerios are the only things that have worked (along with the pharmaceuticals) to keep it controlled.

Today I took a nap, but it wasn't a very good one -- I kept waking up on the verge of reflux, so I had to chew some antacids and take a drink of water. I hope I can sleep better tonight.

I have an appt with my internist/PCP on April 12, but Monday I'm calling to see if I can get in earlier. This is getting ridiculous.

I've done some research and I think the StomaphyX procedure is the way for me to go. It's got two applications -- to make the pouch smaller for people who've already had WLS, and to create a sort of valve at the juncture of the stomach and esophagus, which prevents acid from refluxing up the esophagus. What happens is, the surgeon runs this tool down your throat into your stomach, and then makes pleats (plications) in the stomach wall. It returns the pouch to the original size (for WLS revisions), and for GERD creates the valve. What's got me interested is it's less expensive than regular surgery, it can be done as an outpatient (only takes about an hour, and you're under anesthesia for about half that time), healing is faster, and there's no cutting.

The no cutting part is great, because my entire abdomen is pretty much just a sheet of surgical mesh after my last hernia repair in 2005. I really don't want them messing with that repair, since it's done so well.

So that's the latest on my gastric adventures. To think some people have RnY in hopes of resolving GERD issues as well as to lose weight... I never had GERD until after the surgery!

Updates as they become available.
