Census job may be fucked
3/8/10 02:02 pmOkay, prefatory remarks: when I was married to the gay ex, I primarily wrote checks for everything I bought, believing that if you didn't have the money, you didn't buy it. Unfortunately, this was about when the automatic teller cards came out, in 1981. Of course, we both had to have one.
Now, the gay ex enjoyed going to the ATM with cronies, random pick-ups and anyone else he wanted to impress, and pulling out a couple hundred dollars. Of course, he never recorded these in the checkbook, so I would go out blithely doing silly stuff like buying groceries, paying bills, that sort of thing, and the money I thought was there... wasn't.
This resulted in bad checks. In order to hide his peccadilloes, the gay ex would throw away the returned check notices, so I never knew about them, and couldn't make them good. So some of the companies the checks were written on would file a complaint with the police dept., who would then get a warrant and come out to arrest me.
This happened 3 times, all in the last 2 years we were married. Convicted on one, adjudication withheld on the second, nolle prosse on the third. I thought it was all done with.
Now comes this past weekend a nice little letter from the US Dept. of Commerce, who runs the Census Bureau, saying that my application "was potentially flagged as disclosing information pertaining to a conviction, court martial or pending charges." I have the option of either
One is my maiden name, but with the gay ex's birthdate -- don't know how that happened at all. The other is a complete and total mystery. Lorraine Harlan, birthdate 07/10/1957, has somehow become attached to my record in Florida. I've called all over the state of Florida, and now have the Identity Theft people working on getting that straightened out, along with the wrong birthdate for my maiden name.
I don't mind taking the rap for stuff I did (however innocently at the time), but I do have an issue with whatever this Harlan chick has done!
At any rate, I have the printout of the criminal history, with all my foibles displayed for all to see. I imagine once I send it in, they'll laugh at my application to be a census taker and stamp a big red REJECTED on it. So looks like Chicago in June is most likely out.
Just thought I'd share how wonderful my day is going so far.

- If you do not dispute the identity of the arrest record in question, provide OFFICIAL COURT documentation on any and all arrest(s) and/or conviction(s) in your past;
- If you wish to dispute the identity of the arrest record in question, you may provide a set of original fingerprints. ... If you send a fingerprint card that shows a match with the criminal history record in question, and you did not provide the requested court documentation, you will be made ineligible for hire.
