Kapidex for the lose
10/29/09 10:26 amWell, for the past 4 weeks I've been on the new GERD med called Kapidex -- it's a dual-release proton pump inhibitor. Doc put me on it because I keep having occasional breakthrough reflux while on the Protonix 40 mg 2x daily and Zantax 300 mg at night.
It works really well, but for the past couple of weeks I've been itching and having these little bumps that look like bug bites coming up at night. I thought maybe my quilt had fleas, so I fumigated it, my room and the bed. Changed the sheets. Still bumpy and itchy.
So I thought allergy. Of course I didn't think of the most recent change, the Kapidex, because I take it in the morning, and this was happening at night. I stopped my niacin for a couple of days, still itched. Changed my soap, still itched. Changed my sheets again, still itched. Used a different laundry detergent, still itched. My after shower routine included an almost full-body slathering of 10% hydrocortisone cream to keep me from clawing through my clothes.
I was trying to pinpoint something else that might have caused the itches, and realized (like the semi-literate idiot savant I am) I started the Kapidex just a week before the Horrible Hives began. Because that's what they are -- little small baby hives. Checked the prescribing info on Kapidex, and sure enough, it's listed as a "severe reaction" -- but I'm so rarely allergic to anything I didn't connect the dots, especially given that the hives are so tiny and happen about 8 hours after I take the medicine -- which coincides with the second release of dexlansoprazole...
So I didn't take the Kapidex yesterday morning, and did my old Protonix/Zantac routine. And guess what? NO ITCHES, NO HIVES, NO CLAWING OF MY SKIN!!!
So now I must call my doctor and tell her the Kapidex is a no-go. I will cheerfully eat antacids by the handful and make sure I drink a lot of fluids to prevent calcium kidney stones. Anything is better than that horrific itching.
Makes me itch just thinking about it.
