Finally heard back from the surgeon following my upper GI series, and guess what? Goody goody goody... I have a "very large" hiatal hernia! So large, in fact, that my entire pouch is sitting in my chest cavity!!!

Isn't that just peachy damn keen or what???

The absolute best part is, no one has ever seen this particular situation before. Oh, there've been hiatal hernias with post-RnY patients before, but with the entire pouch deciding to relocate to the thoracic cavity? My surgeon has never seen it, the bariatric surgeon he consulted with has never seen it, and the Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the hospital has never seen it. My surgeon is currently combing the literature and reaching out all over the country for someone, anyone, who's seen this situation.

He says that fixing the hernia will be a snap, but what to do with my wandering pouch? To stop its wandering, that is. He's thinking about either stitching it down to the abdominal wall, or putting a feeding tube from it through the abdominal wall for about 3 months or so. Not for feeding, but to create scar tissue that will tie the pouch down, then removing the feeding tube.

He wants me to have an endoscopy, so I've called my internist for a referral. It will be after the Great Heartland Squickfest, so no worries there.

So there we are. My innards are so fucked up.
