Okay, I've somehow gotten on an Asian horror flick jag. I already own the Japanese language versions of Kaidan and Ringu, and I've seen Ju-On, the original movie The Grudge was based on (I've actually bought it on eBay to add to my collection). I recently saw
Yogen on one of the movie channels -- need to watch it again to see if I want to buy it. Watching Dark Water tonight.

No, I don't speak Japanese, but I prefer the subtitled movies in order to preserve the original score and dialog phrasing. Why am I prancing my secret shame in front of you, my LJ audience?

I want RECOMMENDATIONS!! Here are my requirements:

1. It must be GOOD Asian horror -- not gore for gore's sake, there's plenty of that in English-speaking film. Gore doesn't make a good film.
2. It must be available in the original language with English subtitles.
3. It must be well done, not cheap.
4. Quality over quantity -- I'd rather watch something with only one really top quality heart-stopping scene than some piece of trash that goes ooga-booga every 5 seconds.
5. Movies based on myths of the supernatural are really really preferred.

Here is my current "must-see" list, in no particular order:

Shikoku
Ugetsu
Rasen
Ringu 2
Ring 0: Birthday
One Missed Call
Dark Water (Honogurai mizu no soko kara)
Cure (Kyua)
Ichi the Killer
Inugami
Jigoku (classic) Nobuo Nakamura
Pulse
Dark Tales of Japan -- anthology
Scary True Stories: 10 Haunting Tales from the Japanese Underground -- anthology
Onibaba
