Well, I survived, and I must say, Versed is the tits. All I remember is them putting the plastic ball-gag thingy in, getting situated on my left side and snuggling into the pillow, commenting that I felt like Dr. Lecter and doing my best "Hello, Clarice", then the next thing I knew I was awake. Just BOOM, I'm awake and ready to go.

The good news -- no obvious damage to my esophagus, and my pouch is still roughly the size it was when it was created, about the size of your thumb. Which begs the question, why then can I eat (relatively) so much food? I mean, I ate about half of that friggin' mahksous at Reza's Saturday night! Oh well.

He did find "evidence" of reflux, which appears in the pictures as this yellow sludge, and he took a few biopsies. I'll know more about them probably sometime next week.

Gastrodoc says I don't have a "huge hiatal hernia", it's only one or two inches. He's of the opinion that, pending having the esophageal motility study done, medication should handle my issues. That's fine, only I've already tried the only drug for esophageal motility, Reglan, and it didn't do shit.

And then there's the minor freak-out the surgeon had -- I can't believe he and the radiologist are such noobs that they'd mistake something like a pouch in the chest cavity and a huge hiatal hernia... a big enough freak-out that the surgeon called up not only a bariatric surgeon in another city, but his own Chief of Thoracic Surgery to see what to do...

Seems to me I'm stuck on the horns of the medical dilemma -- surgeons like to cut, it's what they do; internal medicine doctors like the gastrodoc like to push pills. Neither one really understands the other's point of view, and it's the patient stuck in the middle, hoping one of them can figure out what is best.

Which is why I'm an informed, involved patient -- I won't let myself be pushed around by either doctor. I just want a resolution to this, with no ill effects after.

I do have pictures, just haven't resized them and uploaded them yet. I'll do so tomorrow.

And I just want to repeat, Versed is the tits. I love that shit.

ETA: You know, I'm wondering if the small pouch he saw is what's above the diaphragm... and the rest of it is down in my abdominal cavity where it belongs.... hmmmmm....
