Youngsters don't have the social sophistication to handle the faceless experience of social networking; they aren't that good at face-to-face interaction, they're even less able to deal with interactions that have no visual component beyond reading words on a monitor.
Social networks have also become the newest way to bully the pariahs of the schoolyard hierarchy. Because the networks are so widespread and so open to anyone with a computer and a modem/router, the taunts and rumors that were previously restricted just to a physical location now zip around the world within hours, if not minutes.
