Outdoor cat update
11/5/09 11:09 pmEveryone is doing well, and the abandoned pair (Champ and Taffy) are doing much better. Taffy can actually trot now! She's been coming up on the deck for her breakfast and supper, and last night she decided it was time for her to come indoors. She was rather perturbed to not be allowed in, but forgave us when we gave her some lysine treats and a cat vitamin. She tried again tonight, and had to be told no again. As we went to bed, she sat at the door and baowed at us. Yes, she has a Siamese voice. Actually, she sounds almost exactly like Brownie. She baowed at me a couple of weeks ago, and I thought it was Brownie telling me to come indoors, she needed a lap, but no, it was Miss Taffy, telling me I needed to sit down and pet her!
So I did. Who am I to argue with an elegant Oriental princess?
Mike mixed a half dose of wormer into her wet food yesterday, and we'll repeat that in a week. That will kill off just a few worms at a time and not put too much toxin in her system at once. Then in a month we'll give her the full dose at once to clean out everything. We did this with Jack's daddy, Bob, who was a scraggy as Taffy, and he turned into a big, beautiful grey tuxedo. Poor old Bob got sick last summer, though, and we never saw him again. But he was a happy camper while he was here, and he made some wonderful babies -- the feral kittens from this spring were his, and Little Boy is his.
The kittens are doing well, playing and still hanging out in the DogLoo on the deck. They don't run off as quickly when we come outside, and today they lingered on the steps when I went to feed Taffy. Lisa (their mama) and Taffy seem to get along pretty well, Lisa doesn't mind Taff being on the deck when the kittens are there. I think Taff is Lisa's babysitter. I know queens will form cooperative bonds. Lisa has banished Boy and Champ to the front of the house, so they get fed out there. Boy has figured out he can see into the house through the front door, so when he's ready to eat he stands up there and moans.
Now Hallowe'en is over, we need to get Champ and Taffy to the vet to be checked and to make sure Taffy doesn't have anything bad wrong. If she does, we'll let her gently go. I'm hoping the vet will know who they belong to so we can return them, if the home is a good one. Otherwise I think I'll contact Atlanta Siamese and Persian Rescue to see if they can foster and place them. Probably do the same with Little Boy -- he needs a good indoor home, and he's so sweet and loving, but he needs to be an only cat, as he's pretty shy and retiring.
