Sunday morning rant
3/15/09 12:56 amWell. So I thought WLS would take care of my diabetes, did I?
Wrong.
My most recent bloodwork came back with an HbA1c of 7.4, and a fasting blood glucose of 143. The A1c has been creeping up for the past 6 months, but I put it down to holidays and not eating quite as correctly as I should have been (cookies and candy and crap like that). So in January I got a treadmill, swore off all but the occasional pampering piece of chocolate, and got my rear in gear. Back to watching protein, fluid, trying to watch carbs (a bit difficult, because the only thing that settles my horrific reflux is soda crackers, and I've found the only way to prevent reflux at night is to eat some Cheerios dry before I go to sleep -- and that's WITH Protonix, ranitidine, and Carafate!), and exercising on the treadmill at least 3 times a week.
Then in February I began working the soil for my garden, in addition to the treadmill work. I was mostly concerned about the high cholesterol, so I've been taking Niaspan 2000 mg at night and CholestOff twice a day.
So now I'm on 500 mg metformin twice a day, trying to wean off the anti-reflux carbs by eating antacids by the literal handful, and checking my blood sugar obsessively. During the day it stays up around 135 to 140; last night when I went to bed it was 115. I just now took it (12:40 am) and it's 105. I took my first metformin at 7:30 pm with supper.
Shit. Shit shit shit. I don't WANT to be diabetic -- or at least, I want to stay diet controlled. This pisses me off.
Oh well, at least my cholesterol was down into normal range -- 193, trigs 240, HDL 24, LDL 110. Yeah, the tryglycerides are high, but they've been over 400, so I'm not complaining. That's another thing -- I've been exercising like a crazed thing -- I either work my garden for 2 hours or do a cross training routine on the treadmill 30 min (1 mile) every single day -- why is my HDL so low? I thought exercise was supposed to bring your HDL up and lower your LDL?
My metabolism is all screwed up. About the only thing I've gotten out of this surgery is 80 lbs gone (couldn't even get within smelling distance of goal) and the destruction of my vestibular system.
I think this is about the closest I've come to wondering why I did this at all....
