I'm So Handy

I've gotten so handy with power tools, lemme tell ya!

I sleep in an upstairs room which gets ungodly hot in the summer, so I've got a portable AC unit up there that works great. Only trouble is, the downstairs cats (Bill and Crystal the Deaf White Cat) pick on my upstairs cat (Miss Maggie Snacks), and they usually do it in the middle of the night. So I was closing the door at night with Maggie and My Personal Cat Miss Kim aka Brownie Boo in with me. This worked during the winter, but now it keeps the downstairs AC from circulating upstairs and my poor little portable unit couldn't get it under 80 degrees.

So I decided to take the regular door down and put in a screen door. One quick trip to Home Depot later, and I had a wooden screen door, hinges, and a latch. Sealed, primed and painted the door, got amazingly little paint on the screen itself, got Mike to take down the old door, and then he graciously hung the screen door. Doesn't look half bad.

The latch looked complicated, so I left the door like it was, hoping Bill and/or Crystal didn't figure out how to open it. Bill however has been pushing it this past week, making it bang (usually in the middle of the night), and I know it won't be long til he figures it out -- he knows how to open doors with knobs. So I had to put the latch on.

My vestibulopathy makes it hard for me to keep complicated instructions straight, but I persevered. I did manage to drill my middle finger on the left hand some (just some gouges and blood), hung the thumblatch upside down, and misaligned the strike plate, but neosporin, one band-aid, and redoing my dammits worked.

Now I have a lovely latch on the door, and Bill can't bang it anymore. Ha!!

I think I'll make some honing boards this afternoon to sell on eBay -- it's an excuse to use the bandsaw, which has a brand new Timberwolf hook blade on it. Ceramic guide blocks, all tuned up, cuts like a dream.

The latest rocking horse is presently drying under 5 coats of acrylic gesso, and should be ready to paint in a week. I already have the little saddle made, an authentic Victorian style saddle this time.

Now to find some cheap honing compound to cut into little blocks to sell with the honing boards.... already have 6 oz split veg tanned cowhide and plenty of 1" scrap....
