Well, we're in the new house now, slowly unpacking. Cable fucked up, we had scheduled install for the cable and the broadband for July 1, but they never showed. Mike called to see what the deal was, for some reason the fucknutted schedule drones had set us up for July 15 instead. No cancellations or reschedules on Friday, none today... I'm going to bug them twice a day until the 15th. Maybe they'll get so sick of me that they'll MAKE a slot for us.
So for now we're still on dialup access. At least the phone guy actually showed up Friday.
My room upstairs is perfect. Being upstairs, it's warmer than the rest of the house, which is a GOOD thing. As of Sunday I've lost 110 lbs, and losing all that insulation means I'm COLD. Mike says it's too warm, but for me, it's just right. HIS bedroom is the one that's too cold! I shiver in there! (We sleep separate because he snores and I move around a lot, so in order for both of us to sleep well we sleep apart. Just for those who wonder...) I've got my beautiful bamboo Roman shade hung up there, we've gotten the blinds hung, and most of the indoor stuff is unpacked. Guest room is set up. All Mike's books for his eBay book selling business are in the future book room. He has the kingsize bed in his room, which is the master bedroom. I was astounded that it fit comfortably in there. Kitchen and dining room table are still cluttered up some with crap that hasn't found a home yet, but the living room is pretty much done -- semi-antique oriental carpet on the floor, big red couch on the long edge across from the fireplace, clipper ship painting hung over mantle, antique ladderback chair on short wall next to TV, horse statuary and my mother's ashes on mantle, and enough space to put in a recliner we both can use (in shifts) -- I need to rest my neck and back, and Mike likes to stretch out.
Incidentally, does anyone out there have a recommendation for a good recliner? I'd like to get one with a massage option, doesn't take up too much room, and doesn't look totally horrible. Preferably something that would look traditional enough to fit into the general style of my house, which is sort of antique/traditional. No chrome and leather stuff. I'd love something that is sort of Queen Anne wingback-y.
Cats are settling in well, gave Crystal and Bill a tranquilizer for the move. Kim and Maggie made the trip un-stoned. A gratifying side effect of the trank is that Bill doesn't menace Maggie anymore, but Crys still does. Maggie tho seems more confident here, so she doesn't run and hide as quickly when Crys gets weird. I have to make allowances for the Crystalline Cat anyway, she's a blue-eyed white cat, and is stone deaf.
Pete the Best Dog In The World is getting more used to his new place. He goes out in the yard on his own now (the first day Mike had to go out with him so he'd get off the porch!), and he is beginning to look forward to his evening walks (well, staggers) with me. He's not sure about the traffic, since he's never really had experience with it. His yard has cedar privacy fence around 3 sides, and a chain link fence along the back, so he's getting to see traffic in a safe manner.
Mike actually seems happy here, too, which is GOOD. I hate it when he doesn't like a house, he gets morose and cranky and that makes me anxious and feeling like I have to do something to make it "all better". I know I don't, it's up to him to be happy or not, but I have a big part of my personality that wants everyone to be happy and have a good time. Sort of a neurotic party planner, I guess. I've finally realized that all that matters is I like the place, Mike's issues are his issues. And I love it here. Close to town, easy to walk to (when I get built up to walking that far, right now a block or two is my limit), and interesting stuff to see. Antique shops, outlets, hobby stores, grocery stores, fast food, restaurants (I have my eye on a barbecue place, a Greek-Italian place, a couple of Chinese ones, and a home-style place).
I've gotten most of my furniture stripping supplies, ordered some shellac, furniture bleach, and Briwax last night (Home Depot doesn't carry this stuff), and I'll probably get back to work on the emergency pieces this weekend -- my old oak kneehole desk for my computer and my chest of drawers with the horrible multiple paint jobs (brown glaze over ivory paint, over this horrid pink paint, over what looks like either birds' eye maple or oak, haven't stripped enough to see).
I think I'll go ahead and get about 6 or 8 tomato plants and put them in on the side of the house. I should get enough this year to make some sauce from anyway, then I'll plant some ground cover to till under for the garden next year, which will be Quite Big. We're only on 1/4 acre, but there's a strip on the side of the house (sunny, too) that could easily hold at least 10 rows 30 to 40 ft long. Can you say CORN??? And tomatoes, and snap beans, and crowder peas, and I don't know what all. I'll be a canning freak next summer!
Can you believe I've actually CLEANED around here? With canning, cleaning, antique-ing, decorating...am I turning into a Domestic Goddess? Criminentles...
I'll take some pics of my beautiful living room, and other stuff as it becomes presentable.
