The Great Computer Revival
FINALLY. It's done. My computer is back up, I have a brand new 750 gig SATA drive in it, partitioned into Windows (60 gig) and Big Damn Partition (638 gig). I'm slowly moving folders etc. from my old IDE drives onto BDP, then I'll be unconditionally formatting them and putting them on eBay, where people still buy old components.
I'm running a 2.8 GHz Pentium Celeron D processor on an ASUS P4P800-X motherboard (socket 478), with 2 gig DDR PC3200 RAM. Yes, it's old equipment, but for my purposes, it does just fine. I've found a 3.2 GHz CPU on eBay for about $30, and a 1 gig stick of RAM for $20, which will max out the capabilities of the board and Windows XP 32 bit. The board will handle 4 gig of RAM, but 32 bit Windows won't see more than 3 to 3.5 gig, so why bother going higher?
We've talked about moving to Windows 7, but I don't know, XP seems to be serving us well. I guess when Micro$loth completely stops supporting it, we'll upgrade.
Mike's 3rd new motherboard will be here tomorrow -- he's been using the laptop with his monitor, mouse and my USB keyboard plugged into it. So I've been using his old clickety clackety PS/2 keyboard, which I hate. He ordered me another USB keyboard, so tomorrow I'll be back to a nice soft touch, QUIET keyboard.
I sure do hope this motherboard works. A word to the wise, stay far away from ASUS M4A89GTD Pro motherboards -- if you can get them to work, apparently they're the tits, but seems a lot of people have trouble with them. We sure did, and we're not total n00bs when it comes to building computers...
ETA: if anyone needs a couple of 1 gig sticks ofPC3200 PC2100 DDR RAM, I have them up on eBay. Have a look...
PQI POWER RAM
Mystery RAM
Both work fine.
