I drove today!

It was no choice -- Mike had to have a colonoscopy, and they put you out to do those, so he had to bring someone who could drive him home. Hahahahahahaaaaa....

He wasn't pleased, I could tell that, but too bad, so sad. We went up to the hospital at 9:30 am, and they took him back about 9:45. I told him that, rather than sit around the hospital, I'd go out and drive around to get my eye and foot back in practice.

It was amazing how quickly driving came back, considering I haven't driven since 2006, I guess. My oscillopsia didn't bother me at all, I guess all the time I've spent on the computer has helped with that. I drove home, ate breakfast, then went to the bank and cashed a check, went to the drug store and got some antacids, drove all around the residential roads around the hospital, and then went back. Parked in a handicapped spot because I can, and went back in.

I checked with the information center in the testing area, and apparently they'd called me to tell me he was going in for the procedure but I wasn't around. Nope, I was off DRIVING. So the nice little old lady volunteer took me to the day surgery waiting area, and I waited for about 20 min. Got a brand new shiny Higgins General Hospital mug, because the hospital administrator came by and was astounded to see my old Redmond Hospital mug sitting there in his hospital! So he made me a deal -- he'd get me a Higgins mug if he could throw away my Redmond mug. Sure, I said, only reason I had a Redmond mug was Higgins didn't do tension free hernia repairs...

They finally wheeled Mike into a room. He looked so cute asleep on the Magical White Stuff, like he was 12 years old. About 10 min later they came and got me. Mike was sitting up enjoying a ham sandwich and a Coke, the first thing he's eaten since Wednesday (yesterday was Bowel Prep Day, and those of you who've had any sort of GI studies done know what that entails...), so he was doing okay. The doctor came in, and said everything looked alright, he removed two polyps, Mike has a hiatal hernia and some reflux damage at the stomach end of his esophagus, as well as a few diverticuli on his descending colon.

The doctor's office will be calling to set up a follow up appt to discuss what the exam of the polyps said, as well as what to do about his hernia and how to manage the diverticuli. (And all I can hear is Joe Piscopo whining, "I have diiiverticuLIIIIIITis....") Mike is supposed to take Prilosec daily, and 75 mg Zantac in the morning and at night. He hasn't really complained about reflux, but he has a bottle of antacids by his bed too... I don't think he eats them the way I do, though.

I asked about a DVD of the procedure; unfortunately Higgins Hospital doesn't have the capacity to make one, but there are pictures which the doc said he'd cheerfully share. So expect some Bowel Pix in the next few weeks!

And I'm pleased to report that Mike didn't turn white or try to brake for me on the ride home. He even said I did a lot better than he expected. Hopefully I'll get to drive more often; maybe even get a ride of my own again.
